Abstract
This handout is intended for third-year students in Ecology and Environment and provides a
structured introduction to pollution and its ecological implications. It examines the main forms of
environmental pollution, their sources, their mechanisms of dispersion and circulation in the
biosphere, and their effects on air, water, soil, ecosystems, and living organisms.
The objective of this document is to support students in understanding the scientific principles
underlying pollutant behaviour, including transport, transformation, accumulation, and
persistence in environmental systems. It also aims to strengthen the analytical skills required to
study pollution as a major ecological issue and to approach environmental degradation from a
rigorous and interdisciplinary perspective
