Abstract
Abstract:
The alluvial aquifer of El Mahmel to the south-east of Khenchela, which occupies an
area of 343.54 km2, is of great economic importance as it is used for irrigation and domestic
consumption. The aquifer zone is mainly occupied by agricultural areas characterized by an
increasing use of chemical fertilizers, threatening the quality of groundwater. The
vulnerability of the aquifer to pollution by generic pollutants was studied by applying the SI
method (susceptibility index). This study used Geographic Information System (GIS)
technology as a system for acquiring, storing, analyzing and displaying geographic data. The
resulting map highlighted four areas with varying degrees of vulnerability; Very strong and
strong occupying 55.20% of the study area, Moderate (25.08%) and weak (18.70%).
