Abstract
Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive statistical analysis of the spatiotemporal evolution of apple
tree (Malus domestica) cultivation in the Khenchela region, one of Algeria’s leading appleproducing areas. This success is primarily attributed to favorable climatic and pedological
conditions, combined with local agricultural expertise strengthened by the gradual adoption of
modern production techniques.
The results highlight a geographically uneven distribution of production, closely linked to the
diversity of the region’s physical and climatic environments, ranging from the forested areas of
the Aurès Mountains to the semi-arid and steppe plains. Apple production is mainly
concentrated in the communes of Bouhmama and M’Sara, while new promising areas, such as
Hella in Khiran, are beginning to emerge.
Despite some fluctuations over the years, the overall trend remains positive, driven by the
expansion of cultivated areas and the improvement of yields. These advances are largely due to
orchard modernization, the adoption of intensive arboriculture, and technical support provided
to farmers in irrigation and fertilization management. All these efforts are part of a broader
strategy for sustainable agricultural development supported by public policies.
