Abstract
Today, climate change is considered a serious threat to the availability, quantity, and quality of surface
water and groundwater. Countries in arid and semi-arid regions must plan to address water shortages by
sustainably and efficiently exploiting water resources. The reuse of properly treated wastewater for irrigation
is a promising strategy. During their treatment, wastewater is exposed to various weather events that can alter
its characteristics. This study evaluated the treatment efficiency of municipal wastewater by the wastewater
treatment plant of the city of Aïn Beida (W. Oum el bouaghi) based on Physicochemical and biological data
from the period 2023-2024. By utilizing the measured Physicochemical parameters, the treated water was
classified according to its quality and compared with national and international standards. The effects of
extreme weather events, precipitation, and rain indicators on the water quality index of treated water were
tested, and comparisons were made between raw wastewater and treated water. The majority of the studied
parameters were compatible with national and international standards. With high purification efficiencies, up
to 100% for TSS, COD, and BOD5, the performance of the wastewater treatment plant is among the best at the
national level compared to other stations. The WQI values reveal that 96% are of excellent quality. Extreme
weather parameters do not have significant effects on quality variation, except for precipitation, which
improves the incoming water by diluting pollutants.
