Evaluating Fifth-Year Primary School Textbook Activities Based on Learners' Cognitive Demand

Abstract
Textbooks play an essential role in EFL classes, particularly in primary education, where they serve as the main instructional source and learning activities. In Algeria, the fifth-year primary school textbook “MY BOOK OF ENGLISH” was recently introduced as a part of the educational system. The present research attempts to evaluate, categorise the textbook activities and to check their appropriateness according to the cognitive demand. The researchers employed a qualitative content analysis of the textbook activities to achieve this. The analysis focused on evaluating the alignment of the activities with pupils’ cognitive abilities, classifying them according to Bloom’s Taxonomy, and examining whether the activities follow a logical progression of cognitive levels. The findings revealed that the activities in the fifth-year textbook are generally well-aligned with learners’ cognitive development and are appropriate for their age and educational level. The emphasis on lower-order thinking skills is suitable given the students’ cognitive readiness and the recent introduction of English as a subject. Moreover, the activities follow a logical progression that respects the hierarchy of cognitive levels outlined in Bloom’s Taxonomy.

توافقها مع القدرات الذهنيةللتلاميذ، وتصنيفها وفق تصنيفات بلوم، ودراسة ما إذا كانت تتبع تسلسلًا منطقيًا في مستويات التفكير. أظهرت النتائج أنأنشطة الكتاب
تتماشى بشكل عام مع مستوى النمو المعرفي للتلاميذ، وتناسب سنهم ومستواهم الدراسي. وقد تبين أنالتركيز على مهارات التفكير ذات المستوى الأدنى ملائمة نظرًا
لحداثة تدريس مادة الإنجليزية ومدى جاهزية المتعلمينذهنيًا. كما أن ترتيب الأنشطة يعكس احترامًا للتدرج المعرفي كما حدده تصنيف بلوم.

Résumé
Les manuels scolaires occupent une place fondamentale dans l’enseignement de l’anglais
langue étrangère, en particulier dans le cycle primaire où ils constituent la principale source
d’apprentissage et d’activités pédagogiques. En Algérie, le manuel de 5e année primaire intitulé
“MY BOOK OF ENGLISH ”a été récemment introduit dans le système éducatif. La présente
recherche vise à évaluer et à catégoriser les activités proposées dans ce manuel selon la demande
cognitive. Pour ce faire, les chercheurs ont adopté une analyse qualitative du contenu afin
d’examiner la concordance entre les activités et les capacités cognitives des élèves, en les classant
selon la taxonomie de Bloom et en vérifiant la logique de progression des niveaux cognitifs. Les
résultats montrent que les activités sont globalement adaptées au développement cognitif des
apprenants, tenant compte de leur âge et de leur niveau scolaire. L’accent mis sur les
compétences de pensée de bas niveau s’avère approprié, compte tenu del’introduction récente de
l’anglais et de la maturité cognitive des élèves. Par ailleurs, les activités suivent une progression
logique conforme à la hiérarchie des niveaux cognitifs de Bloom.
