Abstract The relative scarcity of water resources in the Remila plain (north of Khenchela), their fragility and unequal distribution create a major risk of scarcity which, despite all attempts to increase supply, seems inevitable. For example, population growth and the development of agglomerations, industrial units and cultivated lands have resulted in a deterioration of the quality of groundwater. This study is an approach to help protect and prevent the groundwater pollution of the Rémila aquifer and to map areas vulnerable to pollution. The application of the DRASTIC method in a SIG environment allowed this evaluation. The use of geographic information systems (SIG) increases the speed and accuracy of mapping. The results show that half of the study area is moderately vulnerable. The highest DRASTIC indices are located mainly in the center of the plain, this is explained by the nature of the relative permeable lithological formations in this zone. The zones with very weak and weak vulnerability occupy the east and west shores of the plain, due to silty clay cover forming a natural protection of the water.
