Abstract
ABSTRACT Today climate change is considered a serious threat to the availability, quantity and quality of surface water and groundwater. Arid and semi-arid countries must plan to cope with water shortages by exploiting water resources sustainably and efficiently. Reusing properly treated wastewater in irrigation is a promising strategy. During treatment, wastewater is exposed to various meteorological events that can alter its characteristics. This study evaluated the purification performance of the wastewater treatment plant of the city of Aïn Beida (W. Oum El Bouaghi) based on physicochemical data for the period 2015-2022. By exploiting the physicochemical parameters measured, the treated water quality index was calculated and then the treated water is classified according to its quality and compared with national and international standards. The effects of extreme weather events (maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, rain and snow indicators) on the quality index of treated water were tested. The majority of the parameters studied were compatible with national and international standards. With high purification yields, up to 100% for suspended solids, COD, BOD5 and the COD/BOD5 ratio, the STEP's performance is among the best at the national level compared to other stations. The WQI values reveal that 96% are of excellent quality. Extreme meteorological parameters do not have significant effects on the variation in quality, except for precipitation, which improves inlet waters by diluting pollutants.
