Abstract
In Khenchela, the Atlas cedar is subject to a decline that is worsening in recent years. This
situation is the result of the interaction of the biotic and/or abiotic stress factors causing the
weakening of the tree and sometimes even its early senescence. The subject of this study is
devoted to the analysis of the potential impact of barite deposits on the decline process and on
the natural regeneration power of Atlas cedar in the Noughis, Ouled Yagoub and Chélia
forests, located in Khenchela. We sampled cedar needles from three stations, on an
assessment of chlorophyll contents, on a university pedagogical laboratory, where variations
in levels between sampling stations were measured by using UV-Visible spectrophotometry.
The results obtained shows important chlorophyll concentrations of cedar needles, near the
barite processing industry. This study can be a basis for research of the controversial
relationship between this endemic tree, which is a very important resource for the country,
and the dust induced by industrial effluent deposition.
