Abstract
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the feasibility of teaching English in Algerian primary schools. Due to this new experience in implementing it only at the third-grade level, it became rudimental to question its efficacy and finding solutions for the challenges that confronted pupils and teachers. In this regard, a mixed methods design was conducted using three data gathering tools: a questionnaire for pupils to gauge their attitudes about this experience; interviews with teachers to investigate the challenges they face; and observation sessions to observe the teaching practices, the obstacles being encountered and crosscheck the results obtained from the interview and the questionnaire. The results revealed that pupils had a positive attitude toward learning English and were extremely enthusiastic about the language. Time and crowding were the main teaching obstacles that prevented the effective accomplishment of the objectives set by the ministry. Besides, the textbook was not satisfactory for some teachers as they had some difficulties adjusting it to the pupils' level. Yet, the teachers were doing their best to adapt to those conditions by applying different strategies and approaches while presenting their lessons through diversifying the use of their resources as way to keep the pupils engaged. Certain pedagogical recommendations have been proposed for the benefit of teachers and learners, such as reviewing the textbook and its organizational structure, providing teachers with guidelines to move smoothly in their teaching, and including technological materials for optimal learning.
