| dc.description.abstract | Abstract This dissertation examines the life, art, and identity of Vincent van Gogh, delving into the tension between traditional aesthetics and his own artistic vision. Drawing from his letters, paintings, and personal experiences, the study explores the profound impact of external factors on his artistic choices, the influence of religion and spirituality on his art, and the connection between his mental health and artistic expression. Through an analysis of selected paintings, the research showcases the negotiation between personal expression and audience expectations. As Van Gogh once wrote in a letter to his brother Theo, "I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart," capturing the essence of his quest for meaning and purpose in his art. This thesis reveals the significance of Van Gogh's brushwork, use of color, form, composition, and texture, highlighting the evolution of his style over time. The study concludes by emphasizing the lasting impact of Van Gogh's artistic legacy, his ability to evoke emotion and capture the human experience, and his relentless pursuit of authenticity in his artistic expression. | |
