Abstract This dissertation explores the themes of displacement and belonging in contemporary South Asian diasporic literature through a comparative analysis of two short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri from her Pulitzer Prize winning collection Interpreter of Maladies (1999), Mrs.Sen’s and The Third and Final Continent. The study intends to explore how Lahiri uses her unique narrative techniques to depict the experience of displacement and the search of belonging, and to show that displacement leads to fundamentally different reactions based on an individual’s relationship to cultural memory and adaptation.the study uses a thematic comparative analysis approach through a postcolonial lens to examine both stories across important themes of spatial displacempent, cultural alienation, material culture, memory, nostalgia, and belonging. it draws on postcolonial and cultural theoritical frameworks developed by scholars such as Bhabha, Said, Brah, and Boym.In addition, the study finds that Lahiri’s narrative techniques her use of contrasting narrative perspectives, minimalist style, and short story form, are important tools in representing these contrasting experiences. The analysis reveals that although both protagonists experience profound cultural displacement, their responses are fundamentally different. Mrs. Sen embodies restorative nostalgia terribly trying to reconstruct her Indian life in America and eventually fails to achieve any meaningful sense of belonging. In contrast, the narrator of Third and Final Continent. Mrs.Sen is a prime example of restorative nostalgia she makes an incredible effort to recreate her Indian life in America but eventually falls to achieve a true sense of belonging, The study voncludes that displacement is not a uniform experience but a complex and multidimensional condition shaped by the individual’s relationship on Lahiri’s fiction and advance understanding of how contemporary diasporic writers use narrative techniques to represent the complexities of displacement and belonging.
