Study Summary : Our study examines the topic of the railway network in southwestern Algeria (1847-1930). This research delves deeply into the strategic background of the French railway project in this vital region and its connection to the Trans-Saharan Railway (Le Transsaharien) plan. This ambitious project was the cornerstone of the colonial administration's vision to achieve an imperial link connecting France to its colonies deep within West Africa. The initial impetus for constructing this line stemmed from purely military and security motives, namely France's desire to consolidate its influence, assert its dominance over the Saharan borders, and revive its expansionist ambitions. The outlines of this plan were officially revealed with the issuance of the Imperial Decree of 1857, which gave the green light for the inauguration of railways in Algeria. The task of implementation and financing was entrusted to capitalist concessionary companies, most notably the "Compagnie des Westernes Algérie" (Company of Western Algeria). This company undertook the implementation of the first routes towards the southwest, starting from the (Algiers - Oran) line, reaching the (Oran - Colomb-Bechar) line, which later became the strategic center of gravity for the French penetration towards the African continent. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this network was its reliance on a narrow gauge (1.05 meters), a technological choice dictated by the geography and rugged terrain of the Saharan Atlas Mountains to reduce construction costs and circumvent the highlands. Despite its technical nature, this line became a colonial tool for consolidating settlement and plundering mineral and plant resources (such as esparto grass and Kenadsa coal), leading to the emergence of new stations and settlements that brought about a profound demographic and social transformation in the Saharan region. Amidst this activity, France continued its efforts to make the southwest a launching pad for expansion into sub-Saharan Africa through the "Trans-Saharan" project. However, this imperial ambition was doomed to failure. Despite desperate attempts and intensive technical studies, the French dream evaporated in the face of the harsh climate, the vastness of the sands, and the astronomical costs, leaving behind only scattered lines at the gateway to the Sahara, a testament to the limits of colonial power and its inability to conquer geography.
