Abstract
Problems of water scarcity and degradation have led to increased interest in the reuse of treated and
untreated wastewater in many countries around the world. The objective of this study is to evaluate the
environmental risks of raw wastewater by knowing the physical and chemical properties of the waters used for
irrigation without treatment. The results of the physicochemical analysis of the raw wastewater of 3 points that
represent the Chechar, Nsigha and El Hamma cities showed significantly higher levels compared to Algerian
and international standards. The recorded values of the electrical conductivity are between 750 and 2250
micro-Siemens per centimeter which makes it possible to classify them under the category of strongly
mineralized waters not suitable for irrigation. The calculation of the COD / BOD5 and BOD5 / COD ratios
reveals the domestic origin of these effluents and their biodegradability.
The alkalizing power is low and the risks on the physical properties of the soil are low. On the other
hand, the risks presented by these effluents discharged without treatment for the environment are accentuated
by the presence of metallic trace elements whose contents exceed the standards.
