Abstract
Abstract
The present paper was an attempt to study what are the benefits and challenges
of having English as a medium of instruction. To attain the aims of the study, the
researcher employed a mixed methods approach wherein different data collection
instruments were used. A questionnaire that consists of fourteen questions was
administered to 13 master one learners studying Computer Science at the University of
Abbes Laghrour in Khenchela to investigate their standpoints about using English as
medium of instruction in their college. Besides, an interview was conducted with six
teachers to elicit information about their attitudes toward using English as medium of
instruction in Computer Science department. The results revealed that both learners and
educators believe in the usefulness and benefits of using english as medium of
instruction in the Computer Science department . Also, both teachers and learners
admitted that implementing it in Khenchela University classes lead to the generalization
of the use of the English Language and thus raise the academic level of students. This
study was conducted with a small sample of lecturers and students in the department of
computer science at Khenchela university, therefore, provides only a partial of the
situation. This limits the generalizability of the results to other departments. Researchers
recommend other methods and more indepth research to be undertaken in the future to
shade more light in this specific area.
