The significance of this study is that it sheds new light on the ways in which black women are depicted in Hollywood films, and exemplifies some means to deconstruct dehumanizing representations of ourselves. This work advances the goal of exposing the inaccuracies of the dominant gaze. It is, then, essentially a critique of black women's marginalization in American cinema. It also contributes to the sociology of race and media studies by critically analysing what messages are conveyed to the masses regarding the place of black womanhood in American society. Moreover, it explores some specific ways that these cinematic representations of Black womanhood are socially and politically damaging. This study took a place during the academic year 2021-2022. Conceptual content analysis is used in order to better understand the content and better explain the messages contained in the two movies: Within Our Gates 1920, and The help 2011. In addition, data was collected from online journals, books, e-books, websites and motion pictures for the sake of supporting this study. Conclusively, the findings of this study showed that despite the repercussions of the CRM, somehow African American actresses in particular are still marginalized and struggling because of racism in cinema, and African American women in general are still portrayed in a negative way in Hollywood.Item A Comparative Critical Analysis of the Coverage of Jamal Khashoggi’s Death in the Reports of Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2020) AROUF Khaoula - OUANNASSI SalimaAbstract Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya News websites paradoxically treat the murder of the Journalist Jamal Khashoggi who has been assassinated in Saudi Arabia consulate in Turkey. For EFL practitioners as well as researchers in the field of critical discourse analysis, revealing the ideologies of both websites and uncovering the political and historical aspects exhibited by their articles helps them to improve their knowledge about the Middle East political issues and media discourse studies. Thus, the current study aims at revealing the ideologies of both websites regarding the case of Khashoggi. In pursuit of this academic endeavour, the study was mainly based on a qualitative content analysis research to investigate and compare the ideologies present at the level of two pairs of passages from Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya websites on two main themes related to Khashoggi’s murder: forgiving the criminals and the reliability of death sources. The analysis applied Norman Fairclough’s Critical Approach that involves a linguistic analysis, a discursive interpretation, and a socio-cultural interpretation. The overall process of analysis shows that Al Arabiya’s ideology reflects the website’s covering up for Prince Mohammed Ben Selman (MBS) while Al Jazeera’s ideology is manifested through disclosing the involvement of MBS in the assassination.Item A Comparative Study of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and George Orwell’s Animal Farm: A Postcolonial Approach(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2019) Amira REGHISABSTRACT This dissertation provides a postcolonial framework through which Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Orwell’s Animal Farm are compared. It attempted to question the already established similarity of the two authors’ stances towards their nation’s imperialism through involving the seemingly pro-revolutionary Orwell’s novella. The study, however, established Animal Farm as a sequel to Heart of Darkness. The first and the second chapters of the work offer the theoretical background of the comparison, emphasizing the related postcolonial theories and the prominent figures who coined the concepts the study utilized. The last chapter presents the analytical discussion of the main aspects of convergence and divergence between the two literary works on the basis of the postcolonial approach.Item A Comparative Stylistic Analysis of Goerge Orwell’s Fictional and Non-Fictional Writing(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2019) Tagraret OsamaAbstract This study sets out to examine the stylistic elements in George Orwell’s novel 1984 and essay "Politics and the English Language" employed to drive home his message of "language and power". The study is also conducted to uncover the non-fictional stylistic elements existing in his fictional work. This study examines as well, style as linguistic choice as employed by George Orwell in the text. To reach fathomable results, this work employs a content analysis based on the checklist of leech and short (1981) that incorporates lexical categories, grammatical categories, cohesion and context. The findings display that lexical items like nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs, convey Orwell's interest in abstract terms related to cognition. The grammatical categories demonstrate Orwell interest in clear simplistic sentences and structure. Usage of cohesion indicates his style in telling facts using clear sequential patterns. Lastly, context shows the difference between the texts in terms of point of view and directness of conveying an idea. Analyzing those elements reflects Orwell’s usage of the journalistic style while forging his fictional work 1984.Item A Correlational Study of Teachers’ Nonverbal Language and Learners’ Classroom Participation Anxiety in Foreign Language Classroom The Case Of 2end Year LMD Students At Abbes Laghrour University Khenchela(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2019) Rabehi Fatma -Fatima Saadi WafaABSTRACT The present study investigate the correlation between teachers’ nonverbal language and learners’ classroom participation anxiety in (FLC). It aims at investigating the linguistic and discursive strategies employed by some Salafis to generate their discourse on Facebook, with focus on the lexical and text-generating techniques. Given the nature and objectives of the research, Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis approach was adopted in the study, and Van Djik’s ideological square model was employed in the analysis and interpretation of the data. Data was collected systematically, targeting Facebook posts - with ideological content - published by the Salafis on their profiles, pages or groups. Results showed that the Salafis’ ideological discourse was of two kinds: discourse of opposition and discourse of allegiance. These are the equivalents of Van Djik’s polarisation: Us equals positive vs. Them equals negative. In generating such a discourse, the Salafis used two innovative techniques: creation of new labelling terms through lexical modification, and multimodal textgenerating techniques. Moreover, it was found that this type of discourse functions as a practice of identity negotiation and membership alignment among the Salafis. The present research proved that social media offers users the opportunity of creating their own discourses using creative techniques. This has implications for the new research arenas of critical discourse analysis Starting from the Monroe Doctrine which stipulated that the Western Hemisphere is US sphere of influence and control and laid the ground for several other policies including expansionism, interventionism, isolationism and territorialism. However, this doctrine has come toe to toe with another rising ideology, Bolivarianism. This ideology was resurrected from the ideals and thoughts of Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Latin America, to confront the longstanding Monroe Doctrine using different policies mainly populism. Over the course of the last two decades a battle of political domination and hegemony has been undergoing between the Bolivarianism and the US with the involvement of extra-hemispheric actors who were elicited by the weakening doctrine. Eventually, the US had to change its foreign policy rhetoric vis-à-vis Latin America. Item A Psychoanalytical Perspective on the Use of Stream of Consciousness in the Work of James Joyce: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2018) Ailane SanaAbstract James Joyce’s novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is narrated through the extensive use of stream of consciousness, and it focuses on the journey of Stephen Dedalus from childhood to adulthood. While living in a world torn apart by political, religious and social chaos, yet, the protagonist follows a life quest to find his own identity as an artist. His identity and existence as an individual and as an artist is at every point reshaped through his journey. The problem arises with the idea that James Joyce did not use the technique of stream of consciousness only to portray the thoughts, ideas and feelings of his character, but he also implicitly embedded the psychoanalytic concepts throughout his novel. The study focuses on a psychoanalytic reading of Stephen’s character by implementing Erik Erikson’s psychosocial stages of personality and identity, in addition to a set of psychoanalytic concepts provided by Sigmund and Anna Freud to understand about the inner disorders and their defense mechanisms. After reading the primary source closely, the case study of Stephen was analyzed, and a detailed discussion and interpretations are provided in the field work section. By using psychoanalysis as a perspective, examining the behavior, identity and psychological development of Stephen were possible; all of them are indicated and discussed while using Freud’s and Erikson’s concepts.Item A self-study of a former EFL teacher in Algerian secondary education(Global Journal of Foreign Language Teaching, 2022) Khaled ChouanaAbstract Several novices but also veteran teachers face several challenges as they try to implement the competency-based approach in their EFL classes. This descriptive research paper aims to develop some reflections on TEFL at the secondary school level with special reference to Algeria. This research uses a self-study of teaching and teacher education practices (S-STTEP) by following the researcher’s work as an EFL headteacher and coordinator in Algerian secondary education for six years in order to illustrate ways in which personal techniques and strategies can contribute to a deeper understanding of teaching English in Algeria. The paper argues that TEFL in Algeria can evolve for the better as teachers adapt to the contextual factors and promote continuing professional development (CPD) and 21st-century skills.Item A Semiotic Analysis of British Stereotypes in Hollywood Movies The Case Study of Titanic Movie(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2020) HAMZAOUI AbdelouadoudAbstract Hollywood plays a huge role in portraying different races and different cultures by virtue of their movies. This dissertation sets out to examine the British stereotypes presented at the level of Hollywood movies by analyzing the Titanic movie. The study also aims to explain the different signs included in the Titanic movie so as to relate them to the common stereotypes about the British people. To obtain satisfactory results, this paper used a qualitative approach wherein content analysis was employed following the semiotic theory promoted by Charles Sanders Peirce as a theoretical structure of this work. The data for this research were collected from some selected scenes of the Titanic movie using the note-taking sheet as its main instrument. The main findings of this research show that the signs embedded in the movie scenes are abundant with stereotypes about the British people and their culture. This research’s findings also demonstrate that Americans’ views about the British are critical regarding the British attitudes, preferences, and style of life. Despite the fact that this study answers the question about the British stereotypes present in Hollywood movies, further studies are needed to crystallize other stereotypes about other racial and cultural aspects in different parts of the world.Item A Semiotic Analysis of Gender Representation in EFL Textbooks Case Study: The Four Algerian Textbooks(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2019) MAHDI Hanaa KEZIZ RayaneAbstract The current research provides an investigation of a crucial phenomenon in English foreing language . Case Study of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man(UNIVERSITY OF ABBES LAGHROUR-KHENCHELA, 2019) ALLAOUI BouthainaThis study is a stylistic investigation about the use of stream of consciousness in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, and James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. These two figures of the Modern Period are known for the use of stream of consciousness in their novels. This thesis demonstrates the common features such as free association and free indirect discourse used by these writers. However, they are taking different notions that reveal the diversity of their style in writing. Chapter one, entitled “The Use of Stream of Consciousness and Moment of Being in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse,” discusses feminist characters, the All-knowing point of view, and the moment of beings as a specific notion used by Woolf. Chapter two, entitled “The Application of Stream of Consciousness and Epiphany in James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” which identifies the aspect of focalization, the limited point of view, coming of age, interior monologue, and epiphany. The Stylistic approach is the appropriate method for this study, which bases on literary analysis and interpretation. Robert Humphrey’s Stream of Consciousness in the Modern Novel is one of the theories and perspectives that is taken as a concrete source to analyze the content of the novels as mentioned above. This research might pave the way for an additional study of the stream of consciousness in a rather consummately psychological perspective.
