Authentication protocols in internet of things
    (2026) Zerraza, Imane
The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing the field of information technology, establishing itself across various sectors, from smartwatches to automated factories. It simplifies daily life and provides significant value to both individuals and businesses. However, the diversity of connected devices, which utilize different technologies and have limited resources, presents major security challenges. This thesis aims to design new secure protocols to ensure the authentication of connected objects, addressing the lack of solutions adapted to the diverse standards, infrastructures, and platforms within the IoT ecosystem. This thesis aims to design an innovative authentication and access control mechanism specifically tailored for IoT edge environments. The proposed approach is intended to support networks composed of a large number of nodes, optimizing data transmission under bandwidth constraints by leveraging the lightweight ChaCha20 symmetric encryption algorithm for secure session key establishment. A key objective is to enhance identity management and access control by integrating the HoBAC framework with blockchain technology, thereby promoting greater precision, scalability, and trust across distributed edge nodes. In parallel, the thesis seeks to maintain a unified and efficient encryption strategy throughout the edge network by consistently using the ChaCha20 algorithm for session key generation. The overall goal is to develop an authentication scheme that ensures mutual authentication and secure communication among key IoT components, including sensor nodes, remote users, and edge servers.
