    Culture Learning as a Prerequisite towards English Language Proficiency among Third Year English Students at Khenchela University

    Abstract The current study aims at identify how culture is being presented in the Algerian EFL classroom, consideration is given to the way the English language cultural component is treated. Along a descriptive study, the attempt was to shed light on the nature of the relation existing between students’ English language proficiency linked to their cross-cultural awareness and whether they realize the real value of learning the culture of the target language as a prerequisite towards their English proficiency. Questionnaires’ use on the population of both third year English students LMD at Khenchela university enrolled for the academic year 2013-2014, and all English teachers at the department as well, revealed, not only the tie aspect of the relation, but a “fact” latterly confirmed through the analyses of both questionnaires. On the basis of these findings, recommendations are suggested, in order to attract both teachers’ and students’ attention on the role of cultural performance for better understanding and language development, which is later on reflected on their English language proficiency achievement.
