    Implementing English as the First Foreign Language in the Primary Cycle in Algeria: Attitudes, Procedures and Challenges

    Abstract: This research is an exploratory study that aims at thoroughly investigating the implementation of English as the first foreign language in the primary cycle in Algeria, instead of French, through the eyes of practitioners: the teachers of the primary schools. More precisely, it tackles teachers‟ attitudes, viewpoints, and suggestions on the most effective procedures and mechanisms for a successful implementation of English in the primary school in Algeria. Therefore, this study was conducted in two primary schools with the sum of 34 teachers, where data was collected through a questionnaire of 17 quantitative and qualitative questions. Results showed a consensus among the teachers who strongly supported implementing English as the first foreign language in the primary cycle and provided effective procedures and solutions for a safe, successful operation الممخص : تيدف ىذه الد ا رسة الى تسميط الضوء عمى أحد اىم القضايا المغوية الطارئة والأكثر اثارة لمجدل في الج ا زئر حاليا والتي تتمثل في اد ا رج المغة الإنجميزية كمغة اجنبية أولى عوضا عن المغة الفرنسية في المستوى الابتدائي من خلال رؤية المعممين في المدارس الابتدائية كخب ا رء في الميدان. وتركزت أىداف البحث حول د ا رسة وتحميل توجيات وا ا رء المعممين حول ىذا الموضوع وكذا اقت ا رحاتيم حسب خب ا رتيم المتنوعة فيما يخص الأليات والإج ا رءات الناجعة لإنجاح ىذا المشروع. ومنو، فقد تم اج ا رء د ا رسة ميدانية في مدرستين ابتدائيتين تضمان 43 معمم ابتدائي )عربية وفرنسية( من خلال استبيان ضم 71 سؤالا متنوعا نوعيا وكميا. وقد خمصت الد ا رسة الى ان المعممين يدعمون بقوة المغة الإنجميزية ومجمعون اجماعا تاما حول ضرورة ادماجيا كمغة اجنبية أولى في الابتدائي، كما تم اقت ا رح أليات متعددة واج ا رءات دقيقة لإنجاح العممية.
